Purnima

Purnima is an acoustic duo consisting of brothers Aneal Padmanabha (acoustic guitar) and Naryan Padmanabha (hammered dulcimer). They create a unique sound that is tranquil, and sometimes hypnotic.

Aneal and Naryan grew up in a household were music was always present, and they were constantly exposed to Classical Indian music, as well as a wide variety of other music. Although they were working on other musical projects, they wanted to explore other musical directions that they were exposed to since they were young. So Purnima was formed (the name comes from the Sanskrit term for "full moon"). Using the hammered dulcimer and acoustic guitar, Purnima effortlessly blends Western and Eastern influences to create folk music with a worldly flair.

Purnima's recordings feature a variety of textures and moods, as well as instrumentation. On three of their full length recordings (Full Moon, Eclipse, 43o 01ºN, 78o 41ºW), Purnima trades their live improvised sounds for multilayered structured songs, often featuring ethnic percussionand guest musicians. In addition to these recordings, Purnima's live sound is captured on Nocturnal and Garland of Sound, featuring only acoustic guitar and hammered dulcimer. Since their formation, Purnima has had an impact on the local music scene. They have been invited to perform multiple times on "Rooting About", Western New Yorkís only showcase for folk music, hosted by Al Riese on 91.3 FM WBNY. They also have been nominated in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 for "best acoustic act" by the WBNY Local Music Awards and have toured throughout the Western United States and Canada.
