naryan padmanabha
Born into a family with roots extending from India to Ireland, Naryan's interests in music started at an early age. He started playing basic Western instruments like drumset and guitar. On these instruments, Naryan created (and destroyed) music ranging from punk rock to folk and many places in between. During his teen years, Naryan began exploring his roots by traveling to India and soon learned the styles of Classical Indian music. Although he is not formally trained, Naryan borrows concepts and styles from many world traditions and plays many instruments from around the world. Naryan is also the founder of epoch music located in Western New York. The label is dedicated to refined sounds and celebrates diversity through world traditions, electronics and style. Naryan is also head engineer of epochemusic's own recording studio, Ananda Kharakhane. The debut release for Naryan's solo hammered dulcimer/santoor album, night and day, presents a mellow and introspective sound. The recording features original compositions and Naryan's improvisational approach to playing the hammered dulcimer. The sweet improvisations needed to be recorded for posterity, due to the introduction of Naryan's new custom James Jones hammered dulcimer, which also lends to a different style of playing as well as sound. The recording also features a semi-traditional improvisational piece on a Persian santoor. The track contains rhythmic cycles that trick the ear and heighten with intensity: atrue musical landscape. |
